SAINT MAROUN CHURCH

At Cardo Architects, we approach every restoration project with a deep respect for the site’s history and an understanding of its architectural significance. The restoration of the Church of St. Maroun in Ain el Delb, South Lebanon, exemplifies this philosophy, blending careful preservation with thoughtful design enhancements to maintain the church’s integrity while adapting it to modern needs.

Constructed in 1914, the church holds deep cultural and spiritual importance. Our restoration efforts focused on restoring the building’s original architectural character, including the removal of later-added stucco on the interior to reveal the beautiful stonework that had been hidden for decades. This intervention restores the church’s authentic aesthetic, showcasing the natural beauty of the stone, while also addressing necessary structural improvements. In addition, we integrated modern systems such as HVAC and water management in a way that complements the church’s historic fabric without compromising its essence.

A significant addition to the church is the installation of a traditional crown around the roof, which not only enhances the visual appeal of the structure but also ensures its resilience to the elements, reinforcing its architectural presence. This design detail contributes to the overall harmony between the church and its surrounding landscape.

The original Assessment Report for the church was in 2015 and the restoration work done in 2020:

We are also finalizing other exterior design elements:

  • A steel and transparent canopy on the west side will protect visitors from the rain, while maintaining transparency to preserve the relationship between the church and its environment.
  • A new sacristy room is proposed on the west side, discreetly integrated into the building to serve liturgical needs, while respecting the church’s sacred atmosphere.
  • The exterior church square tiling

At Cardo Architects, we believe in creating spaces that resonate with both their history and their current context, ensuring they remain relevant and functional for future generations. The restoration of the Church of St. Maroun honors the past, enhances the present, and ensures the building continues to serve its community for years to come.

We look forward to the completion of the remaining design elements and the continued transformation of this cherished architectural landmark.
